  1. There is a Monsanto corporate gathering this weekend at the Sonoma Mission Inn in N. CA. I am in NM but was just told this. It would be great if something could be organized to show up at the hotel. Imagine they cannot use the words local or organic to describe any of the food served.
Please spread the word and see if you can organize something up there….

so i see you are an activist (whatever that means). I assume you know that ag is a big producer of green house gases. While the crops absorb CO2 the fertlizers produce gases that are more warming than C02 and we need to still produce enough food for everyone. So I work for Monsanto. I am not writing here for them or on their behalf. they don’t support any blogging i do but they don’t stop us either one way or the other. I don’t know anyone in my work who would work for Monsanto if they thought what we produce was harmful. Mosnanto is a big company and sometimes companies act in a way just becaus they are big. Coming from a c=smaller company and from academia I can tell you they are much more concerned about safety than any other. You could say their attention to safety is almost analy retentive. They merge with another comapny and their efforts to reduce accidents is very effective. I am constantly surprised by what they do volunterily in terms of compliance with rules. I am totally stunned by the inaccurate information out on the internet about Gm crops and Monsanto.

I worked on making Bt corn. I did the safety studies and can tell you there is no way that would have been released if there was or is a hint of potential harm. But that doesn’t seem to matter. No matter how many government agencies chcek the data and approve the product someone is out their making up stories. The Bt crops have stopped hundreds of millions of gallons of insecticides being used on food crops. As a younger person I was a Frind of The Earth took ecology courses etc. and I can tell you this is basiclly doing a lot of good. I have worked with people from Africa to bring drought tolerant corn to Africa for free. The people over there need it and are very angry that activists here are against this. The Gates Foundation spend a small fraction on Gm crops for African but they get all this grief and they spend a lot of time thinking how best to use their own money. they are not stupid. The best for african corn is to get the best germplasm seed and the best Gm traits – first bt then drought tolerance and then that will make such a big difference. A person I worked with grew up in Zimbabwe and as a child had to weed the fields and pick insects off by hand- instead of going to school some days. teh women do most of the farm work- if they had inexpensive weed control and insect control they could literally have another job and increase their wealth exponentially. But I think this is probably going right over the top of your head. Tell if I am wrong

I work for Monsanto – dont speak for them but tell me if you want to talk

  3. John Huggins says:

Very thoughtful response to what is becoming a ‘lynch mob’ mentality. Today it is Monsanto…tomorrow it could be… (fill in the blank) . Shouting and chanting an allegation doesn’t make it legitimate.

  4. Tom says:

Thoughtful? Agent orange. Clear evidence of Monsanto products wrecking global biological damage. Understanding corporate mentality-profit as THE ONLY goal. Like profit-seeking-missiles, dead eyes of a cruising white shark. No, Monsanto IS the enemy.
